Statistics clearly point out the leaning towards an aging population and coping with elder care and loneliness will become a concern for many of us at some stage in our adult years. Possibly a phone call from a anxious relative or neighbor will force us to confront our parent’s changing condition and our own accountability for helping them.
These days so many women work or lead active lives away from the home and support is not offered to elderly neighbours, by the running of errands and chatting, as it used to be.
If your parent’s is suffering from loneliness, either because of loss of a loved one, or moving away from friends, the first thing you must do is talk to them about their needs. Its possible they are anxious, fear losing independence and are unsure what the future holds. Reassure where you can and discuss what else you may be able to do to help.
Also, you can ask friends to call, but keep in mind, simple, practical things like fitting a phone with an amplifier. Perhaps your parent could initiate a friendship by taking in parcels or deliveries, or baby sit occasionally for a young working mum.
What about a pet? Animals can provide an elderly person with loyalty, companionship and love and need looking after. We all know the value of having something or someone being dependent on us feeling needed. Considerable thought will need to be given to the type of pet according to how much care and attention it will need and the weekly costs. Charitable institutions like Help-the-Aged have a free information sheet on pets to help you and your parent make a choice.
If you have relatives or siblings ask for their support, just what can they do to help as well. Find out what the community can provide in the way of hot lines, transportation, meals-on-wheels, and community center activities. A day center, class or club where they can meet like-minded people or perhaps helping out for a few hours in a local charity shop. The church may run social clubs or coffee mornings. The church can also provide an opportunity for you parent to make an important contribution to the community and there’s no age limit here.
There are usually local schemes whereby the young and the old learn together, school base activities involving numeracy, history and literacy or working with children in hospitals.
Cherish the time you have together and remember engaging with older parents can be hugely rewarding for you as well, and maybe an extra visit or two from you each week will give you both greater insight into who you are and uplift you both.
Crantock Lodge Residential Home:- Crantock Lodge offers residential, respite and day care for the elderly. Situated in Newquay, Cornwall, in the south west of England. It offer 10 rooms - 5 of which have sea views.

In a previous article we discussed the power of newsletter marketing to strengthen your community.
Newsletters can help to build your membership because they are easy to forward. Additionally, they help you communicate regularly with your members, giving you a consistent medium to promote new products, forum discussions, case studies, success stories, special offers and more. Encourage membership contribution by asking members to write in questions for a column, or provide success stories or other information that they may feel is relevant to the site.
Regular e-mail contact makes your members feel involved
What will you include in your newsletter?
Here are a few ideas to get started.
1. Mention the new content you have added to your membership site that week. Give a brief summary of any articles to wet the reader’s appetite and leave them wanting to read the whole article.
2. Give an overview of any interesting discussions on your forum that week. Invite them to log in and join the discussion.
3. Discuss your blog posts for the last week, but also make sure you tell your members what you are going to be talking about in your blog for the following week. This will give them a reason to log in during the week.
4. Use your newsletter to promote any new products you are selling on your site that week, or any affiliate programs you are entering into.
5. It is up to you how much personal information you include in your newsletter, if any. Some membership site owners often include a short update on what they and their family have been up to that week, to connect on a more personal level with their readers. Others stay completely focused on business but are still friendly. You’ll need to decide what works best for you.
When and how often will you contact your subscriber?
That, along with what you put in your subject line, seems to be the question of the millennia. Consider testing a few options to find the one that offers the best results. A lot of it truly depends on your market. 9-5 business people have a different schedule than students and a different schedule than moms. Moms, whether they’re working or not, may not have time during the weekend to open an email but Wednesday afternoons are relatively free. 9-5 business folks may be more than happy to open an email from you every Monday afternoon for the rest of their lives. The answer…consider who you’re marketing to and then test a few options.
As far as your subject line goes…again, testing is important however many have found that cute and clever gets the trashcan every time. Keep it simple, straightforward, and benefit driven.
Terrific tips for effective newsletters…
Don’t rely too much on graphics; many of your members’ e-mails will have graphics disabled on html e-mail by default. Make sure you use Alt tags if you do have graphics so your readers will know what the pictures should be.
Look at your newsletter in the preview panel of Outlook or other email accounts to get an idea what it will look like to your members.
Make sure you include links directly to your site, preferably to different areas of the site in the relevant sections of the newsletter.
Use tables for structure. This ensures your newsletter retains its format on most e-mail systems.
These are just a few ideas for adding newsletters to your membership site.

Do you want to build a community online to promote your product? When you build a community online you not only are drawing in more customers for your product you are also making sure that they are loyal to your company because they will continue to buy from a company they trust. So how can you build a community online that will really help your business grow? Here are 5 easy ways to build a community online.
1. Use forums - Everyone loves to voice their opinion and discuss topics. Online forums really help to build a community because online forums give people a chance to interact with one another and build up relationships. Using a forum can be tricky because sometimes online forums can become very heated places but if you have a moderator that monitors the forums to make sure that forum threads don’t get too heated and conflicts don’t get out of control then forums can be a great way to build a community online.
2. Let users customize their profiles - People like to share a little bit of themselves with others and customizing their individual profiles is one way to let them do that. Social community software will often have customizable templates that will let you set an overall theme for the community but will let individual users customize their own pages.
3. Get everyone you know to join - In the beginning it can be tough to get people to sign up for your online community. No one wants to be the first person to sign up in a community. The more people your community has the more people you will draw. So if you’re creating a public community recruit friends, family and employees to sign up immediately to make it look like the community already has a strong base.
4. Post often - When a community is just starting out it’s important to let people know that it’s an active community. The best way to do that is to post often. Start new discussions, comment on people’s profiles, do anything that you can do to be visible and loud on the community site.
5. Give it time - Often it takes time to build a community online. People need time to find their voices and comfort levels on the site and there also needs to be a buildup of communal trust before people truly feel that they are part of the community. So even if it seems at first like the site is not progressing as fast as you want it to don’t shut the site down or stop being active on the site. Give it at least six months to grow before you reassess whether or not the community is meeting the goals that you set for it.

I recently read the best article by Paula Brock of the Seattle Times dealing with the subject of diversity in the green movement. The piece started with an opening line that read” What’s a nice black guy like me doing in a movement like this?” That question is the basis for today’s blog.
Typically when you hear about the environment or the green movement it’s rarely if ever being discussed in the context of inclusion and communities of color. Generally speaking, the green movement has been seen by the African-American community as organically White. Why? Primarily because the main issues focused on by the masses in this movement do not tend to specifically address the issues that African-American moms are primarily concerned with in African-American neighborhoods.
Neighborhoods with high concentrations of asthma, pollution, and unhealthy schools are all serious concerns of African-American moms so it would seem as if the environmental movement would take off where the civil rights movement left off in the African-American community but it hasn’t. And, it hasn’t because like with the feminist movement many African-American moms feel a sense of exclusion and as if their concerns aren’t the green movements concerns.
What environmentalist are missing out on is that as Van Jones of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights says (and I am paraphrasing), “You can’t ask people who are thinking about surviving to care about the polar bears”. What that means is if environmentalists want to make any inroads with African-American moms they have to go back to marketing and pr 101, back to the basics. Theses organizations have got to demonstrate how such a global issue directly affects these moms and their families in their local communities. Simply localize this global issue.
As soon as environmentalist start talking about asbestos in inner city schools, the disproportionately high rate of asthma in the African-American community, and starts addressing the either real or perceived issue of environmental racism and classism, more African-American moms will sit up and take notice. It’s as complicated and as simple as that.
Playground Public Relations, LLC, was launched in 2005. Since its inception, the boutique pr firm has led their clients’ efforts to increase their visibility within the coveted African-American Mommy Market. Besides being the Principal and CEO of Playground Public Relations, Inc., Terri-Nichelle Bradley has also given seminars around the country teaching companies how to successfully market to African-American moms and teaching moms how to promote and grow their businesses. Mrs. Bradley is married and lives with her husband Rodney and their four children D’Andre, Justin, Maya, Makayla and dog Captain Jack Sparrow in suburban Atlanta.

Community-Based Energy Development or ‘C-BED’ is a scheme which maximizes the use of local and regional resources primarily for developing renewable energy generation facilities. The underlying goal of most C-BED initiatives is to leverage shared resources, such as land, money, expertise etc. in order to help grow and sustain the local community; essentially conforming to the ‘local is better’ motto. In rural areas, C-BED aims for enhanced economic agricultural or ranching benefits with the help of land lease or royalty payments obtained from utilizing the land for renewable energy generation. Ideally, Community-Based Energy Development projects are jointly owned and operated by farmers, local businessmen, schools and other community members who come to share in the growth of such initiatives. When established, C-BED schemes bring about significant improvements in trade, jobs, personal profits (which are shared by the members of the C-BED project) and the local/ regional tax base.
Without a C-BED initiative, the majority of renewable power projects would be owned by large, external developers whose primary purpose is to extract and exploit the resource without adding any value to the local economy or stability of local power markets.
Community-Based Energy Development creates a steady market for energy that can be re-used (once built, wind farms generate reliable power at a fixed cost; and since wind is a free resource, spikes in fossil fuel costs can be avoided), which in turn greatly aids in local and regional energy independence and economic development activities.
What are the many benefits of Community-Based Energy Development and why is the government supporting it?
There are many advantages that Community-Based Energy Development brings about in societies. The government recognizes this fact by encouraging and supporting wind energy in many ways, mainly in the form of subsidies and grants. There are several economic benefits of this long-term activity which immensely assists rural and regional communities. Such projects are also environmentally-friendly and promote local and national energy independence.
With Community-Based Energy Development, it is good to note that these initiatives are normally sponsored by local area banks or rich farmers and the profits of the ownership remain within the community itself. C-BED projects support and yield jobs for union and local contractors, engineers, accountants, lawyers, bankers and main street businesses. If compared with out-of-area owners, a higher percentage of money utilized for the purpose of construction, operations, maintenance etc. stays with the local community and the regional area. Also, more of the dollars spent on electric bills directly circulate back into the local and regional communities as the power is not being brought from afar.
C-BED projects generally target and serve local energy needs and as such typically do not need new transmission lines and leverage the existing distribution lines in the community, which can support the output power load. Even when projects sell power to far away markets, their dispersed nature and smaller size allow C-BED projects to fit onto the existing power grids more easily than big projects. With increasing demand for energy and consequent congestion on the nation’s transmission grids, C-BED provides for a viable and cost-effective solution (remember, as costs are mostly shared, this includes interconnection cost sharing, which is one of the highest incurred project development costs).
Some Highlights of Economic Benefits of Community-Based Energy Development projects
- In May 2005, a US Dept of Energy study revealed that wind power brings more direct economic benefits to local economies as compared to any other form of new electricity (including coal and natural gas). - In Sept 2004, the US General Accounting Office stated that wind systems produce two to three times more jobs and three times more local dollar impact compared to “out of area” interests.
According to wind resource maps, the potential of wind has barely been fully tapped. Biogas, solar, bio-diesel, small hydro and other non-wind renewable energy sources are viable in various geographic areas. Community based energy development programs are a great boon to local and regional communities which has lead to it being backed strongly by the government.
Vert Investment Group (”Vert”) is a leading renewable energy investment advisory firm focused on small to medium-sized utility-scale generation projects in strong power markets. Vert utilizes its proven methodology, the Staged Progression Model, to guide community-based wind development projects to construction ready.

We live in a generation where people are living longer lives than in the past. We are more aware of taking care of ourselves and eating healthier and as a result, we are living longer lives. There are many older retired people today than ever before, and many are choosing to live in a retirement community. This simply means that they are choosing to live near other retired people their own age with the same type of living conditions and interests in mind. The old saying there is safety in numbers can really apply to the older set of retired people. The look after each other and do many things together. This article will talk about some of the benefits to living in a retirement community.
A retirement community can be found in many places today. There are many mobile home parks that are exclusive to a certain age group. This means that there won’t be young children around or teens to worry about. These type of places will be a quiet surrounding for retired folks who want to live a quiet lifestyle. They often have a recreational room in which they may hold social events such as bingo, bunko, or pinnacle. They may have a movie night in which everyone can join in the fun and they probably serve popcorn etc. Many of the rec. rooms have a piano for a more formal event. They may hold dancing nights in which everyone can dress up and attend. Often these type of retirement community places will have an exercise room and possibly a swimming pool, hot tub and sauna. There are many beautiful manufactured homes available these days so you can live a luxurious lifestyle around people your own age and live in a retirement community that is safe. There may even be a locked gate to enter into the premises and everyone looks after each other for safety.
There are other types of retirement community places that are similar, but they house RVs and motor homes or travel trailers. You can belong to a group and pay a certain fee for staying at these type of places. They often offer many of the same amenities as you would find in a mobile home park. You can often find recreational rooms that hold special events and games, you may find an exercise facility as well as a swimming pool and spa. One thing you may find there that you might not find at a mobile home park is a laundry room and showers. These type of retirement community facilities accommodate the needs you would have while traveling on the road. You will meet many good friends at one of these places and the chances are, you will hook up with them again in your travels.
Retirement can be a lot of fun and living in a retirement community, you can not only build great friendships, but learn many things from each other. You can learn from others mistakes and also hear about great sites to see. Along with the fun events and great time spent together in these retirement community places, you will most often feel pretty safe as well, as most everyone looks after each other.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee has countless local attractions from breathtaking natural scenery to some of the best music in the Great Smoky Mountains. One thing the area is most famous for is the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community, the largest group of its kind in North America. For those who want to see this distinctive part of Gatlinburg, cabin rentals are available for both short and long stays in the area.
Treasures for Every Taste
Established in 1937, the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community was founded to preserve the craft heritage of the Great Smoky Mountains. Over the decades it has grown as artists from all over the region gather to provide their unique artistry in one centralized area.
Members of this community include a wide variety of artistic genres. Painters create stunning recreations of the area’s distinctive natural landscapes in oils and watercolors. Woodworkers build handcrafted furniture, cedar chests, and intricately carved figurines. Potters create table and kitchenware that is both decorative and functional.
Other artists offer copper water fountains, scrimshaw knife handles, fine cotton quilts, and much more. Watch a bear carved out of a log with a chainsaw or candles being dipped they way they were when the country was young.
Take the Tour
Over 80 studios belonging to these amazing and talented artisans are gathered on an eight-mile loop on the northeast edge of Gatlinburg. This historic road has been designated a Tennessee Heritage Arts & Crafts Trail.
But this road offers more than just the finest crafters in the region, some of them practicing skills that have been passed down through their families for generations. The area is very tourist-friendly. The road features plenty of public restrooms and places to stop while exploring this historic area. Restaurants dot the area offering everything from local favorites to gourmet coffee and English ales.
Once you fall in love with the area, you will be glad to see there are plenty of Gatlinburg cabin rentals to stay in. These comfortable and well-maintained establishments offer rustic charm combined with all the amenities a tired traveler might want.
Three Annual Craft Shows
The local arts community puts on three major arts and crafts events every year, one at Easter, one at Thanksgiving, and one at Christmas. Crafters gather in the Gatlinburg Convention Center to make it even easier for visitors to see all the amazing creations from the region. Visitors who stay in Gatlinburg cabin rentals have these attractions practically at their doorstep.
The shows include demonstrations of the many crafting skills native to the area. Watch pots being carefully shaped at a wheel or witness the astounding precision involved in jewelry making. All of this is offered with free admission to the convention center.
